KOTA KINABALU (July 31): Yayasan Pengguna Negara Malaysia (YPNM) Sabah has welcomed the Sabah Energy Commission’s (ECoS) Solar Rakyat Programme.
Chairman David Chan described it as a timely initiative to accelerate Sabah’s transition towards renewable energy while supporting the state’s sustainable development agenda.
He said the programme would benefit consumers by offering rebates for the installation of residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, reducing upfront costs and encouraging more households to adopt clean energy.
Eligible consumers with single-phase electricity supply would receive a rebate of RM1,000 per kW, up to a maximum of 4kW, making solar energy more affordable, he said.
“The programme not only helps reduce electricity bills, but also enables consumers to generate additional income by selling excess electricity to Sabah Electricity under a 12-year agreement.
“This approach will also strengthen the state’s electricity supply security while accelerating the development of renewable energy in Sabah,” he said in a statement.
Chan thanked ECoS chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid for introducing what he described as a consumer-friendly initiative with significant long-term benefits.
According to him, renewable energy had become one of the most effective solutions in addressing climate change by reducing carbon emissions, protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.
YPNM Sabah also urged eligible consumers to take advantage of the Solar Rakyat Programme and hoped more initiatives of a similar nature would be introduced to support Malaysia’s aspiration of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the future.
