KUCHING (Dec 21): The Sukan Orang Pekak Malaysia (SOPMA) Baton Run 2025, being organised by Sarawak Deaf Sports Association (SSDeaf), will cover Miri, Bintulu, Sibu and Kuching.
According to SSDeaf secretary Hii Lik Nguong, who is also the event’s organising chairman, the run aims to foster inclusivity and awareness of the deaf community, and at the same time, it is meant to raise funds for the members of this community to participate in sports competitions.
Adding on, he says the events are open to the public.
“It will kick off in Miri on May 4, 2025; Bintulu on May 18; Sibu on May 25; and Kuching, on June 8.
“Each city’s run will cover five kilometres, with exact routes to be confirmed after approval from local municipalities and authorities.
“The event also aims to raise funds for SOPMA XXII Sarawak 2025 and support annual sports activities for deaf athletes,” said Hii, in sign language, during the press conference at the Sarawak Society for the Deaf premises here today.
He added that SSDeaf was targeting 1,000 participants each in Miri, Bintulu and Sibu events, with 1,500 attendees expected to join the Kuching leg.
Meanwhile, SSDeaf vice-president Yong Phil Ping welcomed support from the government, corporations and individuals to help the deaf athletes in any means possible.
Adding on, Yong also said the event’s T-shirt and medals were designed by a deaf artist, also a member of SSDeaf, demonstrating the creativity and talents within the deaf community.
The run is divided into three categories: Category A, which includes a T-shirt, medal and bib per participant; Category B (T-shirt and bib); and Category C (medal and bib).
Registration for the early bird’s promotion is open until this Dec 31, with the fees going for RM45 for Category A, RM30 for Category B, and RM20 for Category C) – after Dec 31, the respective flat rates are RM50, RM35, and RM25.
The closing date for registration is April 4 next year.
