KUCHING (Dec 7): The Ministry of Transport Sarawak must remain steadfast in upholding the principles of good governance and enhancing the capabilities of its officers for the betterment of the state, said its minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
“To achieve a high-income Sarawak, we must ensure high productivity and efficiency from our civil service,” he said when officiating at the ministry’s ‘Good Governance and Integrity Day’ here on Thursday.
According to Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman, good governance transcends the mere fight against corruption.
He said it also involves cultivating a culture of learning and ethical work practices.
Moreover, he underscored the pivotal role of good governance and the importance of work ethics within the civil service.
“Good governance is not solely about integrity; it requires proactivity and an understanding of the urgency of our work, rather than simply clocking out at the end of the day,” he pointed out.
He said it is important for senior officers to mentor their juniors as well as sharing their invaluable experiences and providing essential training.
“These initiatives are vital for the growth of our organisation,” he added.
Lee also highlighted the significance of civil servants understanding the historical context of the formation of Malaysia in 1963, as outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“It is crucial for our civil servants to be well-versed in our history, federal and state constitutions, and the agreements that define our rights and autonomy,” he remarked.
Touching on the ministry’s ongoing projects, Lee said initiatives in green energy and the upcoming international airport are among the major focuses.
“We have the potential to create a regional international airport,” he said, encouraging his team to innovate and improve upon Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision of drawing inspiration from Doha Airport in Qatar.
Among those present were permanent secretary to the ministry Datu Wong Hee Sieng and state Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission investigation chief Katherine Nais.
