KUCHING (Feb 11): A technician here reported a loss of RM300,000 to a bogus online investment scheme that promised lucrative returns.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the man in his 30s was introduced to the scheme last month by a woman he had connected with on Instagram.
“The woman directed him to a website, https://app.joor.org, to participate in the scheme, promising him lucrative returns on his investments.
“Between January and early this month, the victim transferred approximately RM300,000 to various bank accounts. However, when he attempted to withdraw his funds, he was instructed to make additional payments,” he said in a statement today.
Mancha said having failed to recover his investments or receive any of the promised returns, the victim realised he had been scammed and lodged a police report on Monday.
He urged the public to exercise caution when engaging in online investment opportunities and to verify the legitimacy of such schemes before making financial commitments.
He said investments should only be made on platforms registered with Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission Malaysia.
“Additionally, individuals should seek financial advice from registered agents before engaging in any investment.”
He said victims of fraud, including those who have recently made a transaction, can contact the National Scam Response Centre on 997 for immediate assistance.
