KUCHING (Aug 12): The Air Pollutant Index (API) reading for Tebedu, near the Malaysia-Indonesia border, reached the very unhealthy level at 8am on Wednesday, as haze conditions worsened in several areas of Sarawak.

According to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), Tebedu recorded an API reading of 206.

A total of 12 other areas in the state recorded unhealthy API readings, with IPD Serian registering the second highest at 194, followed by Kuching (172), Samarahan (170), Lubok Antu (168), Sarikei (161), Sri Aman (157), Bintulu (157), Samalaju (152), Sibu (151), Miri (133), Lundu (112), and Mukah (100).

Six areas recorded moderate API readings, namely ILP Miri (93), Limbang (76), Lawas (74), Kapit (70), and Bario (64).

An API reading of 201 to 300 is classified as very unhealthy, while readings between 101 and 200 are categorised as unhealthy.

According to an infographic provided by NREB, very unhealthy air quality can worsen health conditions and reduce tolerance for physical exercise, particularly among people with heart and lung complications, while also affecting public health.
