PUTRAJAYA (Aug 12): Malaysia and Australia are strengthening strategic cooperation in the rare earth elements (REE) sector and environmental sustainability, with both countries exploring new areas of collaboration under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Dato’ Sri Arthur Joseph Kurup received a courtesy visit from Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Danielle Heinecke at the Malaysian Parliament on Tuesday.
The meeting aimed to further strengthen bilateral ties and explore new opportunities for cooperation under the CSP, which has been in place between the two countries since 2021.
Also present at the meeting were NRES secretary-general Datuk Wira Anis Rizana Zainudin, senior ministry officials, and representatives from the Foreign Ministry.
A key focus of the discussions was the development of Malaysia’s REE and critical minerals industries.
Malaysia recognises Australia’s technical expertise and leadership in the sector and is committed to developing a comprehensive domestic REE value chain, from midstream to downstream activities, in line with the National Mineral Policy 3 (NMP3).
The two sides also discussed the exchange of best practices in managing rare earth processing waste, particularly Neutralisation Underflow Residue (NUF), as well as efforts to build domestic capabilities in neodymium magnet manufacturing.
Beyond the minerals sector, the discussions covered shared commitments to addressing environmental challenges, including hazardous waste management, marine ecosystem conservation, and climate financing.
Malaysia’s preparations and commitment towards the upcoming 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) in Türkiye were also discussed.
Malaysia believes that combining Australia’s technical expertise with its own commitment to sustainable resource management can help drive the growth of a competitive green economy while delivering long-term benefits to both countries.
