KAJANG (Aug 16): The state Pencak Silat trio Manjaseerah Manuil, Sherlenna Abdullah and Fiffy Ferlisa Rien delivered Sabah’s first gold medal in the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) on Sunday.
They achieved the feat in the Regu Puteri event, beating Johor 9.920 points to 9.905 points at Universiti Teknologi (Uniten) here.
Minister of Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, Chef-de-Mission Datuk Mansur Asun and Sabah Silat president Datuk Aijus Sipil were among those in attendance.
Sherlenna could not hide her emotion when met shortly after the final.
“We are very happy to have won the gold, the first for Sabah at the Games. The victory was unexpected. We just give it our best inside the arena and hoped for the best. We did it and extremely happy with the achievement,” a teary-eyed Sherlena said.
Fiffy and Manjaseerah were equally ecstatic with the win, which ensured Sabah made amends for their disappointment in Sarawak Sukma 2024.
“We were denied a victory after a protest was made in Sarawak Sukma, but we did not give up hope,” Fiffy said
“We won and regained what was ours two years ago,” added Manjaseerah.
The trio train under coaches Mohd Aman Jinli and Muhammad Haafiz Sadik.
Sabah also added two silver medals from Silat on Sunday.
Roslyana Rustam finished second in the Tunggal Puteri event, where a protest from Selangor proved decisive. Izzah Najwa Norwanizam of Selangor won the gold with 9.920 points to Roslyana’s score of 9.895.
The second silver was from Roslan Habil, who lost to Muhamad Azeem Daniel of Federal Territories 9.895 points to 9.900.
Earlier on Saturday, the trio of Mohammad Syafwan Abdullah, Muhammad Darmadiansyah and Mohammad Nazir Muhqaizul Binasir won an automatic bronze after they were eliminated in the semifinal.
In all, pencak silat has collected one gold, two silver and one bronze from the artistic events, and will now turn their focus to the sparring competition.
