KOTA KINABALU (Jan 14): A police sergeant claimed trial in a Sessions Court here on Tuesday to solicit RM1,800 from an individual so that he would not take any action for alleged drug activities.
Zakaria Mohd Damit pleaded not guilty before judge Jason Juga to a charge under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act.
If found guilty, he is liable to a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of bribe, or up to RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
Zakaria was accused of receiving the money which was deposited into another person’s account on June 18, 2021 at a bank branch in Putatan.
The money was an alleged inducement for him not to take action against an alleged drug distribution carried out by an individual in Kudat.
The court fixed February 12 for case management and his bail of RM10,000, with RM3,000 to be deposited with one local surety for another case be applied for this case.
Zakaria, now based in Semporna, was also ordered to report to the MACC’s office every two months and his passport to be impounded by court, pending disposal of the case.
He was represented by counsel Luke Ressa Balang.
