KUCHING (Jan 14): A project to map out all stakeholders will be carried out by the Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) within the paddy cultivation and rice ecosystem in the Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA) in Batang Lupar, Sri Aman.
According to SDI in a recent press release, it was appointed by the Sri Aman Development Agency (SADA) to undertake this project to identify the different needs and challenges of every stakeholder within the industry.
The stakeholders, SDI added, include farmers and landowners, youths, community leaders, anchor companies offering modern paddy planting schemes, rice milling companies, rice wholesalers, community organisations and government agencies.
“The project aims to deliver an ecosystem mapping for better interaction and collaboration between stakeholders that will be used by SADA and the Sarawak government for paddy cultivation planning in the area,” said SDI.
Moreover, it said the mapping will also identify the interpersonal and multi-directional relationships between stakeholders as well as illustrate the gaps or challenges along the rice supply chain.
“The project will involve identified communities in the areas of IADA Batang Lupar, specifically in Stumbin-Tanjung Bijat, and some in Seduku and Lingga-Banting,” added SDI.
It added that this project is to also support and explore how the state can boost its rice self-sufficiency level under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 from the current 32 per cent to 100 per cent by year 2030, through the deployment of modern methods for paddy cultivation.
In this regard, SDI said it will adopt different communication approaches in its engagement with respective stakeholders in the area as well as gather socio-economic data in the mapping exercise.
Meanwhile, the appointment of SDI was officially done at an agreement signing ceremony at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today, involving Sri Aman Acting Resident Mahra Salleh and SDI chief executive officer Lelia Sim Ah Hua.
The ceremony was also witnessed by SADA chairperson Dato Sri Rohani Abdul Karim, Lingga District officer Frank Lani and SADA special administrative officer Alfred Geling Ason.
