KOTA KINABALU (Jan 20): The engineering fraternity comprising of Sabah Engineers Association (SEA), The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch and Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM) Sabah Branch will be organizing a Chinese New Year Open House gathering on February 8.
The annual event from 11am to 1pm will be held at Lot 25, Third floor, Block C, Damai Point Commercial Centre.
It takes the opportunity to foster good ties with fellow members with their families and acquaintances in welcoming the new year in anticipation of a better year ahead.
Besides the lion dance performance, SEA, IEM and ACEM looked forward to the acceptance of Deputy Chief Minister III cum Public Works Minister Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya in gracing the occasion.
During the courtesy call to the minister’s office at Sembulan, all acknowledged the need to encourage the younger generation to consider STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) studies.
The acute lack of young engineers in the job market poses a threat to the supply of needed specialized skills to ensure continuance of the profession. The brain drain of experienced engineers is also a situation that require attention.
Mentioning of the various projects pending implementation, the situation is dire.
Shahelmey hoped the engineering fraternity could push for more awareness among the younger generation and create opportunity to expose to them the strength and merit of the profession.
Other matters discussed included the collaborations of private and public sectors to propel the development of Sabah.
