KUCHING (Aug 28): Sarawak is strengthening its collaboration with Penang in the semiconductor sector as part of Malaysia’s wider push to position itself as a regional high-technology hub.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the partnership would draw on Penang’s established electronics ecosystem while leveraging Sarawak’s growing role as a strategic industrial base.
“As envisioned by the Malaysian government, Sarawak will emerge as a strategic hub for the semiconductor and aerospace industries.
“It will serve as a strong complement to Penang’s long-standing leadership in electronics and advanced manufacturing, supported by world-class expertise, modern infrastructure, and global market networks,” he said at the Sarawak Semiconductor Investment Forum in Penang today, in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report.
Awang Tengah, who is also State Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, noted that Sarawak is projected to generate about 5,700 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030 from its major hydropower dams in Bakun, Murum, and Baleh.
This, he said, would make Sarawak one of Southeast Asia’s cleanest power grids.
Such capacity, he stressed, positions Sarawak as an ideal location for producing ‘green chips’ that meet global environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.
Earlier, Awang Tengah paid a courtesy call on Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation in the spirit of national unity and shared prosperity.
“Through collaboration in semiconductor design, green technology, and research and development, Sarawak and Penang can build a complete high-technology value chain encompassing manufacturing, chip design, aerospace innovation, and sustainable production,” he added.
