KUCHING (Aug 22): Sarawak is seeking to extend the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English to Form 6 level under the Dual Language Programme (DLP), currently only approved up to Form 3.
Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said it was unfair for students who have studied the subjects in English for up to nine years to suddenly switch to Bahasa Melayu at the pre-university level.
“We want DLP to continue into pure science subjects in Form 6 so that the medium of instruction remains consistent. It’s not fair for students to learn in English for years and then be forced to switch,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after handing over the Early Schooling Assistance (BAP) for Form 6 Semester 1 students at SMK Tun Abdul Razak, Jalan Kuching-Serian today.
When asked if the matter was raised at the Technical Committee meeting under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Implementation Action Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof on Monday, Sagah said he had yet to receive the full details.
At the event, Sagah also presented RM85,050 in BAP funds for 2025 to the Serian District Education Office, benefitting 178 students at SMK Tun Abdul Razak.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Education Department deputy director (school management sector) Dr Les Met urged students offered Form 6 placements not to waste the opportunity.
