SIBU (Nov 25): The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) is keeping a close watch on flood-prone areas here, following expected heavy rain in the next two days, said its Sibu chief Andy Alie.
He said patrols are being conducted in areas such as Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Kampung Jeriah, Kampung Usahajaya Baru, Sentosa, Kampung Sri Hijrah, Kampung Kedada, Rumah Gerinsam, Jalan Belian, Jalan Bukit Lima Timur, Jalan Merlin, and Taman Desa Satria.
Other areas being monitored are houses along Jalan Salim, the Stabau area, Rumah Joseph, Jalan Salim Kiri, Jalan Salim/Stabau, Jalan Ling Kai Cheng, Nanga Assan, Lorong Oya 22, Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah, Latap, Kampung Kerto, Rumah Martha Lu, Lorong Gelama, Lorong Saujana and Lorong Tekam.
“For leave management, only 20 per cent of station personnel are allowed to take leave, while 80 per cent remain on standby,” he told The Borneo Post today when asked on Sibu Bomba’s preparation for possible floods.
Andy said the department is also monitoring the latest situation via the i-Hydro application, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) website, and social media in general.
On manpower strength, he said Zone 4 has 12 stations manned by 407 personnel, of which 291 are full time, and 116 are volunteer firefighters.
Zone 4 covers Sibu, Kapit, Mukah, Sarikei, Bintangor, Song, Kanowit, Selangau and Daro.
Andy also advised those living in low-lying areas to be vigilant and to keep themselves updated on the latest weather report.
MetMalaysia has forecast afternoon thunderstorms in several areas here on Tuesday and Wednesday.
