SIBU (Dec 29): A suggestion has been made for Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), especially its Youth and Education bureaus, to set up a task force meant to help Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders in matters pertaining to admission to institutions of higher learning (IPTs) in the country.
In proposing this, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong has also suggested that this initiative begins next year.
Adding on, he observes that the admission process in Malaysia is ‘extremely tricky and complex’.
“Every year, after STPM and SPM results are released, I would receive appeal for help from many parents and students who have scored full marks in their examinations, but are extremely upset when renowned local universities do not give offers to them, especially those of the desired courses such as medicine, dentistry and law.
“Actually, there are skills and techniques required in preparing the application forms.
“I hereby propose that the SUPP, especially its Youth and Education bureaus, would start a task force, starting 2025, to help the STPM and SPM holders by explaining to them about the skills, techniques and knowledge necessary to properly fill up the application forms so that they could avoid the pitfalls, and would be offered the courses that they hope to study to prepare them for their careers,” Wong was speaking at SUPP Youth Dudong’s 10th anniversary celebration at a restaurant here today.
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak Datuk Michael Tiang represented SUPP president Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the event.
The opening address was delivered by the organising chairman, Dexter Kiew.
Others present included SUPP Youth Dudong chairman Councillor Yiing Sy Huat, its advisor Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck, SUPP Pelawan chairman and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting, SUPP Youth Central chairman and SUPP Bawang Assan chairman Kevin Lau, as well as political secretary to Premier of Saarwak, William Anut.
