SIBU (Dec 29): Youth leaders of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) ought to reach out to the younger generations to educate them about Sarawak’s rights, said Datuk Micheal Tiang.
The deputy minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said it is important for Sarawakian youth to be aware of not only their own constitutional rights, but also the safeguards accorded to Sarawak under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
This, he added, is essential as the youth today would be Sarawak’s future leaders in time to come.
“I think our youth leaders should approach our young community members to promote awareness on Sarawak’s special rights under our federal constitution as it is vital for them to understand what kind of special rights and ownership we have,” he said.
“While our present generations of state leaders are planning the new economy models towards a better, progressive Sarawak for generations to come, we hope that we can look upon the generations today as ones who will continue to safeguard Sarawak’s rights and position in Malaysia.
“So that (is why) we have to equip our young people, not only for a better future for them, but also to prepare them to lead Sarawak in future,” he emphasised.
He said this to the press in highlighting the points of his earlier speech at SUPP Dudong Youth 10th anniversary celebration here today.
Tiang, who represented SUPP president and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the event, conveyed Dr Sim’s congratulations to SUPP Dudong Youth for its 10th anniversary celebration.
Dr Sim’s opening address, meanwhile, was delivered by the event organising chairman Dexter Kiew.
Present at the event were SUPP Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong, Youth chairman councillor Yiing Sy Huat, advisor Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck, SUPP Pelawan chairman and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting, SUPP Central Youth chairman and SUPP Bawang Assan chairman Kevin Lau, and political secretary to Premier William Anut.
Meanwhile, touching on a rabies case involving a stray dog in Bintulu over the recent week, Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, called upon all pet owners to be responsible and bring their pets for vaccinations.
“I urge all pet owners, especially for dogs and cats, to bring their pets to have vaccinations according to their vaccination schedule as advised by the vet (Department of Veterinary Services).
“We have all these vaccinations for free; don’t take it for granted that the area has no rabies incidents,” he stressed.
